Design Ideas – Kitchen Sink Ideas for Maximising Utility

Kitchen Sink Ideas for Maximising Utility

From design to size to material, here are some considerations to keep in mind when shopping for your kitchen sink.

Choosing a kitchen sink goes beyond your interior style. You’ll also need to consider your lifestyle, especially if you’ll be cooking and cleaning up regularly. It’s one of the most important decisions to make when planning your kitchen layout, as it can’t be changed as easily. To help you find a kitchen sink idea that works best for you, here are some considerations to keep in mind.

1. Design – Drop-in vs. Undermount Sinks

Drop-in sinks, as the name suggests, are placed with a visible rim that rests on the countertop. This kitchen sink idea makes such sinks easier to install and replace. They are generally more affordable as well. But you’d need to clean the rim regularly, to prevent dirt and grime from building up.

Drop in sinks

Undermount sinks are fitted beneath the countertop and are held in place with cement. This kitchen sink idea gives you slightly more countertop space – a huge plus for compact kitchens. It’s also more convenient to sweep food and water over the countertop and into the sink. However, it’s important to perform regular checks for leaks, to prevent mould and avoid expensive carpentry repair costs.

2. Material – Steel vs. Granite vs. Porcelain

Kitchen-Sink-Ideas-for-Maximising-Utility-3-e1654831740767.png

Stainless steel is one of the most popular material for kitchen sinks, as it requires low maintenance and is heat-resistant. It can also blend well with most designs and countertop material, making it a classic in the modern-day kitchen. The only con is that water spots and scratches may appear over time, though these can be easily buffed out with the right equipment.

Granite composite and porcelain are also popular material choices. Granite composite is highly resistant to water spots, scratches and dents, while porcelain sinks are perfect for  vintage and farmhouse interiors. However, beware of scuff marks and chipping for the latter!

3. Size and Configuration

A double-bowl kitchen sink, with a divider in the middle, is a practical design for separate tasks. You could soap and rinse dirty dishes separately, or prep ingredients in one sink and clean your hands in the other.

Kitchen-Sink-Ideas-for-Maximising-Utility-4-1536x1024.jpg

On the other hand, a single-bowl sink makes it easier to soak and wash larger pots and woks, or prep larger quantities of ingredients. Also, consider the size of your sink based on the availability of countertop space, as well as the configuration of your cabinets.

4. Fittings

Kitchen-Sink-Ideas-for-Maximising-Utility-Cover.png

Once you’ve narrowed down your kitchen sink ideas, choose a kitchen tap design that’ll complement the sink. Make sure the height and direction of the lever work best with your kitchen sink design and kitchen layout. For larger sinks, consider an extendable spray that’ll help you reach all corners, to make washing up much more efficient.

Kitchen Backsplash Ideas

Kitchen Backsplash Ideas

If you are renovating your kitchen, much of your focus would be on the type of cabinetry and the layout of it. Nothing wrong there, but you can also take some time to think about how you want your backsplash to look. Yes, you heard us right. The backsplash serves as a ‘feature wall’ for the kitchen and can help add character and colour to your kitchen – so here are some ideas.

Subway tiles

Subway tiles are popular these days with younger couples, as they are stylish and classic at the same time. The tiles are available in a myriad of colours and can be uniquely arranged to create a bespoke backsplash design for your home.

Patterned tiles

Patterned tiles add more visual impact to your kitchen. You can choose from a range of designs and prints to complement the rest of your kitchen decor.

Mosaic tiles

Mosaic tiles are not just found in old coffee shops in HDB estates, you can use them to up the ‘wow’ factor of your kitchen too! Pick darker colours or those that shimmer under the lights like these diamond mosaic tiles, if you want to create a luxurious look and feel.

Tempered glass

If you prefer minimal fuss and cleaning, you might want to opt for tempered glass. Tempered glass is more durable and resistant to high impact and heat as compared to normal glass. If ‘plain’ is not your style – you can choose a backdrop (think chic prints or art deco) and install behind the glass to jazz up the backsplash.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel would be a great choice for a sleek and minimalist look. With stainless steel, it would be easy to keep the backsplash clean – all you need is a wipe down.

A fan of open layouts? Find out how Yi Ting and Wenxiang turned their flat into a bright and airy studio-like space.

Seated by the bay window that overlooks the rest of their home, couple Ong Yi Ting and Poh Wenxiang laugh when naming their favourite space at home. “Since our flat is one connected space, can our answer be ‘our home’?” they say cheekily.

Home owners Yi Ting and Wenxiang

A Completely Open Layout

While the concept of open layout is relatively common, what makes Wenxiang and Yi Ting’s 3-room BTO flat stand out is their decision to completely do away with bedrooms. The result is a bright and airy studio-like space designed to suit the couple’s lifestyle needs.

“We started brainstorming for layout ideas as soon as we selected our flat,” Yi Ting recalls. “Our priority was to have maximum space with minimal maintenance, so that helped guide our design process.” With a background in design, the couple experimented with a variety of layouts—with and without bedrooms— before deciding on the current iteration.

On why they did not opt for a bigger flat type, Yi Ting laughs and says, “The bigger the space, the higher the level of maintenance required. We didn’t see the need for a bigger flat, plus, with the current open layout, the space is more than sufficient for our needs.”

From the From the living room, one can get an overall view of Yi Ting and Wenxiang’s 3-room flat.

The couple considered each other’s living habits and needs, to help them better plan the flow of their home whilst still fully utilising the space. For instance, they wanted to combine the living and dining area, so having a sofa in the room wasn’t ideal. Instead, they designed an L-shaped seat that extends to the window for this purpose.

An L-shaped seat that borders the room is one of the couple’s many designs that integrates form and function.

Creating Different Spaces

Wenxiang and Yi Ting were careful to remove only the non-structural walls in their flat to facilitate a seamless flow within the flat. They then used design elements to differentiate the various spaces. The kitchen for instance, is set apart by its tiled flooring as opposed to the vinyl overlay in the rest of the flat.

To further differentiate the kitchen from the rest of the flat, darker tones such as black and grey are used.

The home owners also made full use of the service yard, transforming it into a dual-use space comprising a laundry area and lounge corner.

The service yard also has a cosy breakfast nook

While home offices are usually designed in a room setting, Wenxiang and Yi Ting’s workspace comprise a customised high table by the window, to take advantage of the natural light and green views.

The workspace with a view

Next to the home office is the bedroom, and a built-in wardrobe doubles up as a partition between the bedroom and bathroom.

DIY Projects

As hands-on home owners, the couple had also taken on a handful of DIY projects, including installing the shelving and master bathroom vanity cabinet.

Fittings in the form of shelves are some of the many DIY projects

Their biggest project, Wenxiang shares, was the kitchen cabinets. “We measured the dimensions and sourced for a carpenter to provide us with the wood laminates. We then put together  the kitchen cabinets ourselves. It took us quite some time, but it was worth it,” he beams.

The TV console and extended bench in the living room were built in a similar fashion, where the couple assembled  them using customised wooden planks, before adding storage beneath.

The space under the extended bench is used as storage (left), while the TV console doubles as a hutch for the home owner’s pet bunny (right)

While designing their flat from scratch has allowed Yi Ting and Wenxiang to enjoy cost-savings and the ability to fully utilise the space, they said the task may not be suitable for all home owners.

“We spent a considerable amount of time trying different layouts and were also very involved during the renovation process. Not all home owners have the luxury of time to do so, so engaging an interior designer and/ or contractor might be a better alternative for them. However, for us, the fulfilment we got in designing our home is definitely worth the effort.”

Reno Inspo: 10 Dry Kitchen Ideas

Reno Inspo: 10 Dry Kitchen Ideas

Check out these different kitchen layouts!

One major advantage of having wet and dry kitchens is the flexibility to tackle different types of cooking tasks in dedicated zones. Wet kitchens are for stewing, frying, and baking, while dry kitchens can accommodate ‘lighter’ tasks such as chopping vegetables or making a cup of coffee for a morning pick-me-up. These 10 homes are guaranteed to inspire your next kitchen makeover!

1. A Kitchen Bar Concept

Interior Firm: Hall Interiors

Dry kitchens are usually located close to communal areas and can be modified to become a dining/entertainment space for your guests. This classy dry kitchen with a galley-style layout accommodates a dining table, counter, storage spaces, and even a wine cabinet—talk about multi-functional!

2. A Compact Layout

Interior Firm: ARK-hitecture

Dry kitchens with a one-wall set-up are mighty useful if you would like to keep kitchen space to a minimum. These spaces are typically used for simple tasks, like brewing coffee or making sandwiches, unlike in wet kitchens where heavy-duty cooking is carried out.

3. A Food Prep Station

Interior Firm: DISTINCTidENTITY

While it might seem strange to have a food preparation counter in a communal zone, this idea is perfect for kitchens that are unable to fit a full island. It can also doubles up as a dining table, after the meal is prepared!

4. A Coffee Corner

Interior Firm: Ethereall

Of course, functionality is a top priority when designing your dry kitchen (layout, countertop material etc.), but this doesn’t mean you’ll have to compromise on aesthetics!

For the perfect coffee corner, opt for an in-cupboard niche! Not only does it add a dash of cosiness to your kitchen, the niche also makes for additional storage space. Add a splash of colour, such as a graphic backsplash or painting your cabinets a bold hue and watch your dry kitchen transform into the highlight of your home!

5. Storage Solutions

Interior Firm: Couple Abode

Dry kitchens are often compact spaces that are in full-view to all your guests, that’s why it’s super important to keep them neat. The easiest trick to hide the clutter in plain sight? Build a row of cabinets at the back. It will also make it easier to reach for your teacups/ pots/ coffee machine in the morning!

6. A Galley Kitchen With See-Through Doors

Interior Firm: Lemonfridge Studio

Splitting your kitchen into wet and dry zones could result in having spaces that look too confined and small on their own. Instead, opting for see-through doors can counter that problem as it creates the illusion of a bigger space.

7. The L-Shaped Layout

Interior Firm: The Local INN.terior

By adopting the L-shaped kitchen, this Tampines home managed to fit plenty of things in a compact space—top-and-bottom cabinets, a nook for a top-freezer fridge, and a breakfast counter.

8. A Scandinavian-Inspired Dry Kitchen

Interior Firm: The Design Practice

The best place for your dry kitchen? Beside the dining table! It can now double as extra serving space when you have guests over. Having an open concept layout is also handy as it makes passing dishes around much easier.

9. A Clear Divider

Interior Firm: BLACK N WHITE HAUS

If you’re leaning towards having an open concept kitchen, consider building a dry kitchen between a communal zone (e.g. the living room) and your wet kitchen as it can also serve as a subtle space divider.

10. An Organised Space

Interior Firm: Habit

While countertops are a mainstay feature of every wet kitchen, not every dry kitchen needs one, especially if you don’t have much space. In such cases, extendable shelves are a clever alternative.
